There is some evidence that health professionals’ attitudes towards substance abusers exert a significant influence on their willingness to intervene and the quality of such interventions (Karam-Hage et al. 2001). Negative attitudes have been associated with the application of alcohol and drug training into clinical practice by nurses, reduced likelihood that clients will pursue referrals and reluctance to engage in management and treatment with substance abusers (Ask et al.
